Menu Plan Monday -6 May 2013

menubutton
Menu Plan Monday again.  For the next few months I'm trying a new experiment to cut grocery costs.  I'm going from twice a month shopping to only shopping once a month.  Yes, I'll be stopping in from time to time (likely on dance night since we are in town any way) for fresh veggies and milk but that's it.  Last month was about $50 less than usual.

We've got a bit of extra school to do.  I just compared the current school week to the number of weeks left on the calendar and we are behind quite a few.  We really lost a bunch after Isobel died.  The lessons are fairly easy for Ella (almost too easy), so I think we can squish at least an extra half/full week into our regular weeks.  I want to be done most of our school work before the hot and stupid humid weather arrives.  I think we may do a bit of workbook learning over the summer just to stay in the habit, but nothing too strenuous.

Monday:
pb&h
leftover roast beef from my birthday supper on Saturday
Tuesday:
pizza
spaghetti and meatballs
Wednesday:
pizza
sugar pancake
Thursday:
chicken salad
chili
Friday:
grilled cheese
Jane's chicken burger
Saturday:
tuna sandwich
Joey's Fish and Chips with Grandma for Mother's Day
Sunday:
steakhouse pizza -new Pioneer Woman cookbook and likely invite Grandpa over

Menu Plan Monday -29 October 2012

I hope every one on the coast is keeping safe.  I'm praying that the strong winds that the weather is calling for don't make it this far north/east.  Oh my that is one thing we really don't need!  The poor grain corn has suffered so much stress this summer, I don't think it would be able to remain standing in that kind of wind.  And once it breaks over to the ground it is garbage!

A quieter week this week.  We've just got skating and Halloween to look for ward to, which is good sometimes.

Christmas Countdown week 2 finds us giving the kitchen an extra good scrub.

Menu Plan Monday -25 October 2010

First of all I need to say something...
TWO MONTHS TILL CHRISTMAS!!!!!

I'm going to stop saying I have a quiet week coming up!  I ended up busy last week and missed making a couple things (like the chicken pie and poor knights) and shuffled a couple meals around.  I'm going to try harder to stick to the menu plan this week, our meals are getting too carefree.

Monday:  dance night
roast chicken and dressing
autumnal chowder
Tuesday:  grocery day for those well enough
pb&h for Daddy
bring home something for a treat
Wednesday:
Dutch potato pancakes
leftover chicken
Thursday:   knit night
pizza
chicken sandwiches
Friday:
pizza
roast beef
Saturday:
macaroni and cheese
casserole roasted pork -Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking
Sunday:
??
hot beef sandwiches

Menu Planning

When I was a kid, my Mom didn't plan her menus.  We went to the grocery stores every Friday and wandered around trying to decide what we needed for the week.  Mom also had to get stuff for in my Dad's lunch box to take to work at GM.   She then spent the rest of the week trying to decide what to thaw and make that evening.

Fast forward to 2010.  I only shop every two weeks and try to use our limited grocery budget to the best of my abilities.  I hate not knowing what to make and I don't like trying to thaw things quickly.  So I menu plan.  I save money and gas by shopping every two weeks.  I always know the night before what needs taken out of the freezer and how to plan the next day, eg, throw supper in the crock pot after supper or cook just before eating.  I don't follow my menu plans to the letter, some weeks it is more like a guide.  Sometimes life gets in the way and I have to re-vamp everything (like when Colin has emergency surgery, that menu went right out the window).

Previously, I've just written the menus on paper.  But this year I got a new white board for phone messages.  I found this one at Staples.   It has spaces for the phone and for paper messages (we don't use paper much), but the new and exciting part was the month calendar (I know I'm an office supply geek).  I'm able to actually write the menus on the day they are scheduled and I write down any events that come up for those days.  This way it's easy to see if any meals need shifted, easy meals moved to a busy day, etc.  It also helps keep life more organized.  My real calendar is across the kitchen on the back door and not always visible from the phone (which is attached to the wall).

Now all I have to do is figure out a way to put all my recipes (titles not actual recipes) on the computer so I can, maybe, automate the process a little bit.  Some weeks it takes me longer than others to make my menus.  I also have a list (well a number of pages) of recipe ideas that I want to try.  That way I don't have to pull out my cookbooks just to make plans.  I can just go down my list and see what tickles my fancy.
I can't do without my menu plans.  I'd be lost and we wouldn't eat as well as we do now.

Easter Monday

What a beautiful weekend!  It was a glorious day for our Risen Lord.  We had temperatures in the low 20'sC, couldn't ask for better this early in April.  I didn't get an Easter picture because the kids disappeared outside as soon as dinner (lunch) was over.  We had ham, potato casserole, coleslaw, jello salad, buns and ice cream cake for dessert.  It was Colin's dad's birthday too.  He's 67 this year and doing well.  This is Ella's picture from last Easter, but she wore it again this year.  It's much shorter, probably knee length and her hair is too short for braids, but other than that, this is my girl  :)

Daddy had a good day off yesterday.  He missed his morning nap but got one in after lunch  :)  Daddy's back to work today.  In fact, he has 2 cleaning jobs today.  Good thing the rain cleared this afternoon.

Also, it's Menu Plan Monday over at the other blog, so here's the link.

Menu Plan Monday -1 March 2010

Another Monday another Menu.  Today is the first of March and it has come in like a lamb, a cold lamb but a lamb nonetheless.  Guess that means March is going out like a lion -we'll see.  I'm ready for spring.  Kimberly over at Homeschooling a Handful is making me long for spring, sigh, those lucky west coast folks.

Menu Plan Monday -25 January 2010

Another Monday, another plan         :)

Just 11 months till Christmas, are you making plans yet??

Weather has changed here today and we are stuck in the house.  It is around 3C (37F) and everything has turned into a skating rink.  Colin isn't taking the pigs to the butcher shop until this afternoon, in hopes that the sanders get out soon.  Dull and miserable.  I'd take cold and sunny any day.
