Her heart was weakened by the neglect of her congestive heart failure by her ‘doctor’ and it was just too tired to survive the covid she caught at the nursing home. It’s been a busy 36 hours or so, making decisions and signing papers – so. many. papers! Belinda and Stefan came up Thursday and have been a great distraction for Ella. Mom wanted to be cremated. So that’s what we are doing. We’ll wait until spring (hopefully we will be allowed a reasonable number of guests) and bury her in Bowmanville beside my Grandpa.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-86266288691578699852022-01-15T18:55:00.003-05:002022-01-15T18:55:56.645-05:00I Don't Even Know Any More...
I want to start with my thanks for everyone who is still here. I also need to appologize to my friends on here with whom I usually send emails too. Especially Elizabeth, I just realized I missed your Christmas and everything going on in your life and I’m really sorry for that.

My world has fallen apart and thing don’t look like they are ever going to get better. The start of the story is here, in case you forgot. Mom got sent back to the hospital. At first the ER doctor thought it was pneumonia. Turns out it’s was just the congestion from the heart failure. The good news was the hospital admitted her again. In fact, most of the nurses up on the floor couldn’t believe she was even released in the first place (we never did find out who authorized the discharge). So back in hospital for an unknown time. More good news, her shoulder was NEVER broken. Apparently this is a problem with being at a teaching hospital. The orthopedic surgeon let his students look at Mom’s xray. THEY were sure it was broken, so he let them run with that. Since Mom had absolutely NO PAIN he finally looked at the xray and realized it was fine. To be fair to the doctor, he came in person to appologize to Mom for the mistake. That certainly made Mom’s mobility improve.

Lots more diuretics and she was down 60ish pounds. Mom finally improved enough that there was talk about sending her down to the rehab floor. We really thought things were going well and life would go on, more or less, as they did before.

Forgot to mention, Mom had been having really weird dreams and some rather odd waking thoughts. The hospital had her on some sleeping pills, something she’s never had before. I suggested they cut the dose and they did and that seemed to fix the problem, or so we thought.

OK, now Mom’s in rehab. She’s loving the physio guys and working really hard to get back home. Weight is continuing to drop off. She ended up loosing close to 90 lbs of fluid!!!

August 17, Mom sent home!! We were promised physio visits and lots of at home support. I made a bunch of ‘tv’ dinners to put in the freezer so she wouldn’t have to do any cooking. I also had the house cleaned to make it liveable (apparently Mom had turned into a bit of a hoarder and had Ella sworn to secrecy). Mom was not doing well. She kept calling and I had to go over every other day. No help ever arrived. I would never have let her come home if I had known she wouldn’t get the support promised. She also, still wasn’t herself from time to time. I’d get some rather odd phonecalls.

September 10, I took Mom in for her cataract surgery. We then drove her down to Kaladahar to meet up with my BIL. Belinda and Stefan were keeping Mom for a week post-surgery. Cataract surgery requires lots of eye drops for a week and Mom couldn’t do those herself. It was a nice to have a break and not have to worry about Mom. Given everything that was going on, it was obvious Mom couldn’t stay at home. We found a retirement apartment/room for her at Country Haven in Beachburg. It was perfect, a private room with a shared bathroom within her price range. It took a lot of convinvincing. Mom really thought she could manage by herself.

September 20 we moved Mom into Country Haven. She was able to take a lot of her things from home. She made her room look very cozy. This should have been a really good step and it looked like it would be, at first. She was making friends with her neighbours, especially Robert. We went out a few times for groceries and just a drive. She really seemed to be accepting the new normal and she seemed to enjoy most of the people.

On the surface, things looked good. But I was still getting bizarre phone calls and when we were out she’d say things. It was like dementia had started overnight. There was none of this before the fall. Her personality was changing, and not for the better.

November 5, Mom had her other cataract surgery. Belinda and Stefan too her home again for a week of rest and eye drops. Mom never called the entire time she was down there. Not even to talk with Ella. Even now, she only calls when she wants me to go and fetch her something.

Mom’s walking continued to get worse. She shuffles and barely lifts her feet. She’s lost over 100 lbs now. She’s not acting like herself and barely even looks like herself. Every time I see her, it looks like she hasn’t brushed her hair for days. She’s all disheveled. Mom would never look like this.

Christmas day I get a phone call from one of the nurses. She really wants to send Mom to the hospital, but she’s refusing. The nurse said she was delirious. I seriously thought Mom was going to die that day. Boxing day they finally convinced Mom to go to the hospital. Turns out it was a UTI and apparently delirium is a very common symptom. They sent her back that evening (well, we had to go get her because the patient transfer don’t work weekend evenings).

On top of all this we were very busy trying to get Mom’s house sorted, cleaned out, and cleaned up. So. much. stuff!! Colin lost track of how many trips to the dump he took. I sold a few things and donated a few things, but so much went to the dump because I am just so emotionally exhausted dealing with everything. Belinda and Stefan tried to help, but there’s only so much they can do from Pickering. My cousin lives in Renfrew now, and he’s been such a help too.

I stopped buy to drop off some snacks for Mom. The home is under a covid outbreak lockdown so I couldn’t go in. I told her to come out to the door (which she had been doing) and she wasn’t there when I arrived. The guy at the door went to find her. He brought her out in a wheelchair!!! When did that happen? She looked like she’s weighs 90lbs! If she had been in a room with other old ladies, I’m not sure I would have been able to pick her out without looking closely. She really didin’t seem to be there.

This has been so hard on Ella. I don’t know what to do. I am so lost…

Oh yeah, this has happened:

<img alt="" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51822621823_71ef0ea0f7_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-radius: inherit; border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px; vertical-align: bottom;" />
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-24128809266580277972021-12-25T12:43:00.000-05:002021-12-25T12:43:01.664-05:00Merry Christmas!!!

Since January Mom’s legs have been swelling. Every time Mom calls the clinic (the clinic refuses to see people in person even though every other type of doctor can manage) she is told it’s “just old age”. Well, fast forward a couple of weeks ago and Mom’s legs are now so swollen she can’t fit into her pants and needed to borrow on of my dresses so we could take her to her kidney doctor appointment. She could barely get out of the car!!

Two days later, we get a phone at 4:30 AM, it’s Ella saying Grandma fell in the bathroom and she has the ambulance on the way. Wow that was one fast drive to Beachburg. Thank God Ella was there. She was AMAZING!!!

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51276388515_65cd2622da_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Mom was very lucky and only fractured her right shoulder when she fell. Somehow she missed the tub and the toilet. Her legs just gave out on her. The hospital was horrified by the size of her legs. In the first 4 days they were able to drain (with medication) 20 lbs!!!!!!! of fluid. Even with that much weight gone, her legs are still huge.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51276094539_c356a9b691_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

She started doing better at the hospital. Physio and the wonderful nurses were doing a great job to get her back on her feet and walking again. It’s hard since she can’t use her right arm, so that means no walker for now. The hospital has also discovered that she has A-Fib and ‘slight’ heart failure. Stuff you would think your primary care doctor should know about.

So my sister and BIL arranged for Mom to go to the nursing home/retirement home in Beachburg. Everything was fine on Friday when she arrived. Just a little congestion, which is normal for this time of year. Then a cough started. It’s sounds like she’s coughing up a lung. I called the head nurse and spoke with her. We decided to send Mom back to the hospital (the Home’s doctor doesn’t come in until Wednesday). I’m here at home waiting for a call to say the ambulance/bus has arrived and she’s on her way.

Please, everyone, we need your prayers.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-82515713563943167912021-06-05T10:14:00.000-04:002021-06-05T10:14:06.714-04:00Crazy Weather
What's the weather doing where you are? It can't seem to make up it's mind. We got so cold last week that Colin actually lit the furnace again! We've got the a/c back on and I'm so very glad because they are already talking 35C/95F with the humidity. My asthma is acting up today, so I'm so very grateful that I don't have to fight the humidity too.

I've got a bit of sewing done. So many of my dresses are getting worn out. Far too worn for going to town.

I had a lot of trouble with this dress. The original top didn't fit, still not sure how considering it was a custom pattern? So I pulled out my old faithful Folkwear dirndl pattern and changed it to fit the skirt, which was already cut out. I hand inserted the side zipper, which was a first for me.

See these happy, smiling faces?? That's because our whole family is now 'half' vaccinated. It has done a world of good for Ella's anxiety. Colin and Ella had rather sore arms for a few days (couldn't lift over their heads without pain/supporting the arm). I was fine. We also had really great people give us the needles. I've NEVER had a 'shot' that hurt as little as this one.

Now if only we could get some gentle rain in suitable amounts, everything would be great.

Hopefully it’s here to stay. Facebook has been showing me blizzards from years past. Meanwhile, Colin is talking about starting to plant wheat at the end of the week if it stays dry.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51111647077_bf454869bd_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

The snow drops and crocuses are finished. Somehow it ‘snuck up’ on him, but Ella and I remembered. I was going to make stuffed tenderloin, but I couldn’t easily find the tenderloins that I know I have out in the deep freeze. I pulled a pork sirloin roast out instead. Sirloin is a weird cut I’ve never seen before. It didn’t have much marble so I headed off to Pinterest to find a way to cook it. I’m glad I did. Even Ella said it was really good, and she’s gotten really picky about pork lately. Here’s the recipe. My roast was just over 4 lbs so I cooked it for longer. So good! In fact, so good I didn’t get a picture – ha ha!!

Colin and Ella have been having a hard time getting through a whole cake before it gets fuzzy. I’ve been making lots of squares since Christmas and that seems to make them happy. I made brownies for Colin’s birthday. And since it’s his birthday I splurged and put icing on. I don’t think brownies need icing. Now be warned, I think these are weird as a ‘dinner roll’ because at the end they get glazed with sugar! But it’s not a Fletcher family gathering without these rolls. Ella loves them, so I often have a bag full in the freezer. They make good snacking. I’ve cut the recipe down a little bit so that it fits in my bread machine easier. If you do this in the bread machine you MUST babysit it until it’s done mixing. Of course, you can also do this the old fashioned way, with a bowl.

This method I’m going to show you is the way I do most of my bread doughs. It comes from the book Secrets of a Jewish Baker. It’s a bit faster and I think it turns out a little nicer. It’s a sponge method where you let the yeast do it’s thing for a while before adding everything else.

In your bread machine pan, add the following and mix till combined (I just use a spatula).

3 3/4 cup water

3 cups flour

4 1/2 tsp yeast

1 1/2 tsp sugar

Let this sit for 30 min.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50956895523_48c41112f4_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Add the rest of your ingredients:

1/2 cup lard, melted and cooled

3/4 tsp salt

3/4 cup sugar

3 3/4 cup flour

Start your ‘dough’ cycle and watch the consistency.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50957701997_e3670245d1_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Just about done kneading. Now here’s where this method saves time. You don’t have to let the dough rise. You take the dough and shape it as you wish. If you are using this method to make Grandma’s dinner rolls, cut the dough into 96 little balls (4 dozen rolls) and drop them into greased muffin tins. Let them rise somewhere warm for 30-60 min.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50956894243_f9552e998b_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

As you can see, this day I got tired of rolling out balls. I made 3 dozen rolls and a pan of sticky buns. Ella loves sticky buns too. If you want to make the sticky buns, just roll out 1/4 of the dough. I make it 12 inches wide by however long it will go. Then all you have to do is spread it with butter and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. That easy, no measurements needed. Then roll up the short end and cut into 12 -fits my 9×9″ pan.

Bake at 350F for 15-20 min, the sticky buns might take a few more minutes. Turn out of the pans as soon as they are done. Of course, the sticky buns need turned out over a plate.

Mix 2 Tbsp milk with 1 Tbsp icing sugar. When the buns are cool, wash the tops with the glaze. They freeze well if you can keep the vultures out of them long enough.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-5320726714667936112021-02-20T09:41:00.002-05:002021-02-20T09:41:24.027-05:00Winter in the Valley
Well, it’s definitely winter now! We’ve had a few -25C (-13F) mornings, including today. We’ve also had more snow. We got a couple of inches yesterday even though the radar map didn’t show any?? What’s really weird this year is how light and fluffy all our snows have been (except for one). Usually our snow is heavy and wet and dangerous for roofs. Not that I’m complaining, I’m glad Colin hasn’t had to climb many roofs this winter.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50961789628_12362e7a3a_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

This old house always looks good in the winter. It’s sport sized too, so it will be a lighter sweater. I don’t have a pattern picked out for the yoke yet. I’ve actually ordered some more yarn for the pattern part. I’ll show you when they arrive.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-91575280193785677632021-01-22T14:07:00.000-05:002021-01-22T14:07:35.631-05:00January 2021

Wow, it’s been some start to 2021! I’m so worried for all you guys living in the States. Please stay safe and I pray this is all over soon and the United States can get back to itself.

Early January we had to take Colin’s Dad down to one of the hospitals in Ottawa to get a ‘thing’ removed from his eyelid. Ontario went into lockdown again on Boxing Day so we were worried about food and bathroom breaks. Luckily McDonalds and Tim Hortons are still allowing people inside (to order not eat) so it wasn’t a problem. We have to take him down again in February. My Mom had a health scare over the holidays but thank God that turned out to be nothing. As per usual though, the doctor didn’t call and tell her she was OK. Mom had to call the office and talk with the good nurse to get the information.

I just realized I didn’t share the elf mischief this year.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50738563452_1a466016de_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

I made some new mice for Belinda’s cats -she only has 2 but these mice are addictive and I couldn’t stop. It’s literally been a year since we saw them. Ella has missed them so much. Belinda is only going into the office (downtown Toronto) one day a week and Stefan is working from home. They wore masks and gloves and only stayed long enough to open presents. It was a good, safe visit but weird with no hugs.

Last weekend Colin and I went out to the usual B&B. If I did, I don’t know where it went. I don’t even have a good excuse for you. It seems like I spent most of November doing laundry and washing dishes. I did spend some time running lunches and people around. We’ve got all the crops combined and most of it sold. And to be honest, thousands and thousands already spent for next year’s cropping – it would be nice if the salesmen would wait until you at least had this year’s crops off before wanting your money for next year.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50638300037_7ff777a478_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

I stopped in at Value Village to see if any China needed rescuing. Even better, it was a totally customizable pattern so I could use my measurements and the gauge that I wanted. Much nicer than trying to make my knitting fit the gauge of the pattern. If you remember the pattern that I ‘copied’, it had a hood. I decided not to bother with the hood. Not only am I 49 years old (a little old I think for a hoodie), but a hood would drive me nuts on days that I don’t have my hair up. It’s bad enough that some of my dresses demand certain hair styles (to avoid back zippers/buttons); I didn’t need a sweater doing it too. And you’ll notice, I’ve even got the buttons sewn on already -ha ha!

Hope you are all still there? And I hope you are all doing well and hanging on. Let’s see if I can find more things to post about in December.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-24517674016810122472020-10-23T14:10:00.000-04:002020-10-23T14:10:01.285-04:00Round Up for the Week - 23 October 2020
I’ve been working on my sweater a lot this week. It was so good to get out in the fresh air and have other adults to talk with -and not have to discuss corn or weather -ha ha! I do wish some of the other Moms would be better at feeding their children. Ella had a good time (especially hanging with her bud Ephrem) until the ‘hangries’ started to take over. Then of course, Ella’s the one that becomes the butt of the anger, which (also of course) Ella takes to heart and causes her pain.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50520607601_cd735ba953_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Ella’s been busy carving up a bunch of Daddy’s pumpkins. Not too far, just down the highway, but we were travelling some roads that even Colin has never been down. What were we doing? We were checking out an old bell. Colin has always wanted one. We passed one up back on our honeymoon and Colin has kicked himself ever since. As usual, Colin wasn’t sure about spending money for something not ‘needed’ but I told him to get it for himself. He never just buys fun stuff because he wants it and he deserves a treat. I think it looks really good on the ‘shade shack’. He painted it black, but I rather like it this way.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50453166506_24ff8fd867_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Too much sunshine, the yarn is a nice dark blue from Knit Picks.

I started knitting a sweater for me. I’m using one pattern for the ‘style’ but I’m using a cool custom sweater generator for the actual ‘pattern’. The pattern I’m copying is called ‘Dagi‘. It’s very cool hoodie with fair isle sleeves. Though I’m not sure I’ll be doing the hood. I needed to find another actual pattern to follow because I couldn’t get the gauge to work. It seemed much too loose for the yarn I have. I seem to have that problem with fingering yarn and sweaters. The pattern generator at Kniterator is amazing. Not only do I get to use the gauge that produces a fabric that I like, I get to make a sweater to the exact measurements that I want. Since I’m not overly tall, that’s a really great bonus.

It’s kind of funny considering how dry we were all summer (though that part wasn’t funny it was scary), but we keep finding all sorts of mushrooms around the yard. We found 2 giant puff balls and some cute ones that looked like a Smurf village. This is the most recent one:

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50453234757_b42a944824_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

It’s more pink in real life. It’s so nice to be able to bake again. It’s been pretty quiet here on the farm. Colin has been busy with his seed cleaning, mostly winter wheat. It’s so hard to imagine it’s been that long already. It doesn’t feel like it. We had a bit of excitement leading up to the wedding. On the 14th there was a blackout that took out Ontario and a large chunk of the north eastern US. Thank goodness I only had a bit of handwork left to do on my dress. Though we got our power back quickly, we seem to be on the same line as the Base in Petawawa. This was great news because we had about 1000 pigs in the barns that need the hydro to keep the fans going to keep them alive! And man, was it hot and humid leading up to the wedding. Colin was busy combining the wheat and I was wondering how I wasn’t going to melt -ha ha! Luckily, there was quite the thunderstorm on the Friday and swept in a glorious cold front. I always joke and say Mom was chilly at the wedding which meant it was a lovely temperature for everyone else. The other bit of excitement took place during the service. Colin and I are standing to the side (must have been the lead up to Communion) and he sees this massive (probably a wolf spider) running across the floor and heading our way. He holds my hand even tighter because he knows I’m going to freak if it gets too close and I see it. He send death rays at the spider and the spider decides to change course and run away. I’m so glad I didn’t see it at all.

Not much of a celebration yesterday. We’re not comfortable eating inside restaurants yet, especially with as ‘cozy’ as our favourite place. We had lunch at the Chip Pit like usual for a Sunday and then we headed to Beachburg so Colin could do Mom’s grass. He took the scenic route and we stopped at the Westmeath Lookout.

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50262691078_1e9f3f1642_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

This is the view looking towards Pembroke. This farm is just around the corner from the Home farm, but it’s easier and quicker to bring lunch to the field. It’s been so hot this summer without any real breaks (I need more than one decent temperature day to consider it a break), but you probably know that already – ha ha! Colin had a thermometer in the combine yesterday (a decent day temperature wise) and it read 100F! Imagine, 8+ hours in the combine at 100F. No wonder he comes home with heat stroke some days.

We had an unexpected visitor Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. We were woke up at 3:30 by Ella pounding on the bedroom door with a blanket over her head. There was a “giant” bat dive-bombing her in bed. I peaked in her room and yes, there was a large bat hanging off the wall!! By now Colin’s dressed to come and investigate. He sees the bat and heads downstairs for weapons (broom and dustpan). Unfortunately, by the time he comes back upstairs we can’t find the bat. We search around Ella’s room and can’t make it stir, so Colin assumes it’s left by however it got in (we still don’t know how). Ella and I sleep the rest of the night downstairs on the chesterfield. There was no way she was going to sleep in her room not knowing where the bat was hiding. After breakfast we went up to have another look around and fix her bed (stuffies were everywhere). I told her to take everyone off the bed so we could straighten up her blankets too. Nearly everyone was off the bed when Ella picked up Lula

<img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50225768811_b6b5483229_w_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" />

Lula has been Ella’s best buddy for most of her life. She made my Lysol her whole room. Even after all these years Lula is still taking care of Ella and protecting her from things that (literally) go bump in the night. To be fair to Ella, it was a really good sized bat. We’ve had a few in the house over the years, but this one was about 8 inches, which is bigger than most. We still have no idea how it got into Ella’s room. Hopefully that’s the last one.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-82578722252211568772020-08-04T16:33:00.001-04:002020-08-04T16:33:16.570-04:00A Day Late, Again...
<img alt="" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6045" data-attachment-id="6045" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-description="" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="greenmpm" data-large-file="https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg?w=319" data-medium-file="https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg?w=300" data-orig-file="https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg" data-orig-size="319,139" data-permalink="https://fletchingtonfarms.wordpress.com/2014/01/13/menu-plan-monday-13-january-2014/greenmpm-11/" height="131" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" src="https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg?w=300&h=131" srcset="https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg?w=300&h=131 300w, https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg?w=150&h=65 150w, https://fletchingtonfarms.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/greenmpm.jpg 319w" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" width="300" />

I’ll use the grocery header today because that’s why there was no post yesterday. Yep, there’s puddles in the driveway!!!! We got about an inch of rain on Sunday and it’s drizzling again today. Hurray!!! Thank you God! It’s not a lot, but it’s just in time. The corn was literally days away from being written off as garbage/worthless. It’s amazing how fast the grass greens up after a long awaited rain. Our grass wasn’t as bad as some because Colin stops cutting it when it stops raining. I swear some people must cut their grass every week because they ‘cut the grass every week’. There is some really short, really dead grass out there. Our last real rainfall (and it wasn’t much) was back at the end of June. We could use another few days. And I’m really enjoying being able to sleep well at night and I need to get some baking done.

More ideas at I’m an Organizing Junkie
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-59057289332315787882020-07-17T10:11:00.000-04:002020-07-17T10:11:05.177-04:00Rotisserie Chicken -sort of...
Well, that crazy heat didn't break until this past weekend. It was so nice to have a couple of days where we could leave the windows open and not feel like we were living in a cave. Needless to say, our meals last week weren't worth writing down for you guys. I thought I'd share a recipe today instead. This is Ella's new favourite dish from my air fryer. Obviously, our big 8-9 lb chickens won't fit in the air fryer. So, I need to watch for when the store has those little 'fryer' chickens on sale. This rub makes the chicken taste like those little pre-cooked ones you can buy from the store. I 'borrowed' this picture off the internet because I couldn't find the picture of my chicken (I know I took it on my phone...) I'll replace this picture when I make the chicken again.

Rotisserie Chicken

rub:

4 tsp salt 1 tsp garlic powder

2 tsp paprika 1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp thyme 1 tsp pepper

Rub all over chicken. You can do this the night before, but I never have the chicken thawed in time.

Pre-heat the air fryer. I just hit the 'pre-heat' button or you could pre-heat to 350F. Put the chicken in the air fryer, breast side down. Cook 350F for 40 min. Flip the chicken over half way. Check for doneness.

Obviously, this recipe can be done in the oven too. Just cook the chicken at 325F for about 25 min a pound.
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-70774320715856717722020-07-07T15:52:00.000-04:002020-07-07T15:52:11.885-04:00Holidays 2020

Hi! We're back! Did you notice we were gone? We were very happy to discover last week that we could still go to our B&B/cottage for our annual Canada day holiday. It was very last minute, but luckily I had already done the pre-holiday grocery shop. And yes, I packed my air fryer -ha ha! We often have trouble with the BBQ out there. The air fryer does such a nice job (even on steak), so along it came.

Ella came out for the first day and a half. She such a homebody (especially now), she's also very lucky Grandma doesn't mind driving 2 hours to get her and take her home. As usual, Ella had a great time fishing with Daddy. I hung out in the screened in gazebo, safe from the sun and the black/deer flies doing my knitting. Even though she was only out for a day and a half, Ella caught 8 good sized small mouth bass!!

Not to be outdone, Daddy caught a nice pike with his first cast into the lake. I lost track of Daddy's bass/pike total after 15. I caught 2 nice bass, but we didn't have a camera handy.

Our traditional holiday selfie with my girl. Another tradition for our holidays is really bad weather. One year there was even a tornado warning! This year it was hot and sunny the whole time. The first evening we were there we did see this gorgeous rainbow. There was rain somewhere, we were hoping it was at home but, no.

The rainbow was beautiful. At one point it was a double and then the clouds moved some and it became a complete rainbow.

Before Grandma arrived, Carol took Ella out to the barn to meet the new additions.

Colin and I had a really nice time after Ella went home. It was our first time apart in 108 days! I think we are all (Ella included) starting to miss Ella's weekends at Grandma's. For a treat, we ran into Killaloe to get lunch. We shared a chicken fingers and fries and I got a Beaver Tail. Just behind the Beaver Tails chip truck is a really nice park where the train station used to be. The old bridge is still there:

There's an old farmer saying here in Ontario. They want the corn to be 'knee high by the 1st of July'. Even though we are really dry things are still looking good.

Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1469153399204920499.post-3225595542328481662020-06-23T10:04:00.000-04:002020-06-23T10:04:46.299-04:00Menu Plan Monday on a Tuesday 23 June 2020
<img alt="" class="alignnone" height="523" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48769526977_101352e3a6_c_d.jpg" style="background: url("/wp-content/themes/pub/mistylook/img/shadow.gif") right bottom no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); border-right: none; border-top: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 4px 10px 10px 4px;" width="697" />

We continue to melt in Ontario this week. They are promising a cold front some time today. I’ll believe it when I feel it. Hopefully it will bring along some gentle rain. Not doing much. I have a dress cut out but still waiting for the energy to work on it. The house was so hot yesterday I gave Ella a ‘heat holiday’ from school work. Thank goodness we have the pool. It may be small but it helps get the body core temperature down. I like to go after supper when the sun’s moved around to the other side of the house and I don’t need sunscreen and sun glasses -ha ha.

Nothing too exciting on the menu. Well, for once, I actually got some money back from my tax return. I decided to treat myself to some "squishy mail" too. I ordered from Knit Picks as usual. I really like their yarn. And I had a "you haven't ordered in a long time" discount code which covered the ridiculous 25% exchange rate -bonus!!

The ball of Comfy is a new one for me. It is a cotton/acrylic blend. Oh my, it is SO soft. I'm using it to make a 'produce bag'. I tried 3 different patterns and finally decided on this one. The rest of the yarn is for a cardigan for me. It's really cool and has fair-isle on the sleeves but a solid body (and hood if I make it). The yarns are either Stroll, Stroll Tonal, or the Stroll Tonal mini packs.

My knitting mojo still seems a little off, but at least I've got some beautiful yarn!
Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15015659430842427691noreply@blogger.com0
